The Gilded Veil

This commission began not with a design, but with an idea worth testing: a lace pattern carved into the tank itself, before any paint was applied.

The engraved areas were finished with a different silver base than the rest of the tank — a deliberate choice that changes how light reflects across the surface, giving the lace pattern real depth rather than sitting flat against the panel. Layered candy paint was built up across the tank in stages, translucent and crimson, allowing that shifting silver base to show through with every layer.

The gold detailing was applied as hand-laid leaf, then lightly burnished afterward to soften its shine and suggest a sense of age — a finish that looks earned rather than new.

Getting the engraved lace pattern smooth and level with the rest of the tank demanded patience beyond the painting itself: nine separate stages of flatting and reapplying clearcoat, gradually filling the carved detail until the whole surface read as one continuous, seamless finish.

When the tank was finished, the client saw it first indoors — pleased, but not yet seeing everything the piece had to offer. It was only outside, in direct sunlight, that the work truly showed itself: the engraved lace pattern catching the light from different angles, the layered depth becoming visible in a way no photograph quite captures.

Two months later, he emailed to say the tank still surprises him. Parked in the sun, new details reveal themselves depending on the angle — the same effect that first caught him off guard, still finding him months on.
