Springboks Commission

Motorcycle bodywork airbrushed in Springboks rugby team colours and emblem design

This commission came from a South African client with a clear starting point: he wanted the bike to be a tribute to the Springboks.

The bike's team colours were more complex to get right than they first appeared — the Springboks' green and gold have shifted subtly over the years and across different media, so matching a colour that felt authentic rather than simply "green and gold" took careful reference work.

The bike's large, curving panels suited a design that could flow continuously from front to back rather than sitting as separate painted sections. Airbrushed flowing lines run up either side of the front fairing, framing the screen in a shape that echoes a Springbok's horns, while the design across the rear of the bike carries that same movement through to suggest the animal's tail — the whole bike reading as one continuous form rather than a set of individual panels. The Springbok emblem itself was airbrushed in, alongside custom lettering that replicates typography used in official Springboks media and advertising.

The most demanding part of the work was continuity — lining up the flowing artwork precisely so it read as a single unbroken movement from one end of the bike to the other, panel to panel.

The client was closely involved throughout, actively shaping design decisions at every stage, and was delighted with the finished result.

Every commission starts with a conversation.
